Southern Expressway from Pinnaduwa (Galle) to Godagama (Matara)
The section of Southern Expressway from Pinnaduwa (Galle) to Godagama (Matara) has been opened to public on 15th March 2014. The section from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa (Galle) was completed in November 2011 and is in operation at present.
Galle–Matara section of Southern Expressway has two intersections in between Pinnaduwa & Godagama interchanges; namely, Imaduwa interchange & Kokmaduwa interchange. This section also consists of 4-lane capacity similar to the earlier section from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa. The maximum operating speed for this section is also 100 kmph. It is expected to extend the Southern Expressway from Matara to Hambantota with the intention of linking Mattala Airport and Hambantota Harbour to the Commercial Capital, Colombo in future.

Southern Expressway is the first expressway in Sri Lanka and it is an important link of the proposed expressway network. It travers from Kottawa to Matara (126 km) and the construction of the section from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa (Galle) has been completed as a dual Expressway with 4-lane facility. Galle Port access road has been built to connect Galle city to Pinnaduwa interchange.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC) are the main funding agencies for this project. The section from Kottawa to Kurundugahahetekma (65km) was constructed under the financial assistance of JBIC and the section from Kurundugahahetekma to Pinnaduwa (Galle), 29.3km was constructed under the financial assistance of ADB. The section from Pinnaduwa (Galle) to Godagama which is about 35km has been agreed to be financed by the Export and Import Bank of China.
The design speed of the Expressway is 120km/h. The operation speed of the Expressway is 100km/h.
The Southern Expressway will be extended up to Hambantota connecting Mattala Airport which is being constructed.
Improve transport facilities for future development of Southern Region.
Provide a highway to act as a catalyst in encouraging and attracting industries and services for the Economic and Social development of the region.
To promote inter-regional transport facilities by developing this road, considering it as a major component of the proposed Expressway network.
Sri Lanka’s first ever access controlled expressway from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa (Galle) was ceremonially opened by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse on 27th of November 2011. The length of this section is 96km and newly constructed Galle Port access road of length 5km will connect this Expressway to the Galle city. The expected travel time from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa (Galle) when this expressway is used about one hour.
The section from Galle to Matara of length 35km is under construction and scheduled to be completed by 2013. There are plans to extend the Southern Expressway up to Hambantota connecting Mattala International Airport which is being constructed. The length of this section will be 75km and surveys are being done to acquire land for this section of the Expressway.
